it may seem like a strange post title, but this weekend I had the opportunity to hear a guitar that really stank?….stinked?…stunk, that’s it, stunk.
I’m not the kind of person to bag on ones guitar playing, and I’m not going to today. What I’m am going to comment on is ones ability to know if the guitar you’re playing is in tune.
This week there was a guest musician play worship at church. He’s a talented musician, average singer, and successful businessman from who runs a hospice in Mexico. He played a 12 string, and I couldn’t figure out the maker, but what I could figure out was that it was way outta tune. 5 songs, and 20 minutes of worship, and was I brought closer to God…I’m sorry to say that I wasn’t, all I could think to myself, was TUNE THAT THING!!!!!
Now I know that 12 strings are hard enough to tune, get them right, and they are heavenly, if they’re out…not so much. So here’s my suggestion…make sure your instrument is in tune, lest you subject people to a sound that stinks.
It’s a big duh, but it needs to be said.

Well, maybe THOSE are the folks who need the new self-tuning guitar… I guess there IS a need for that thing after all.
Amen bro. Dang. Out of tune guitars sound worser (is THAT a word?) than my mother in law telling me to have more kids… :0

I hear ya- nothing worse than out of tune instruments. We have dueling recorders going at our house these days, endless “hot cross buns” in the key F and E.. No good.
That being said, that issue with tuning the 12er is EXACTLY why I’ve been to intimidated to ever buy one.
A guy in our church plays a 12 sting about every other week. He does a great job tuning it–it sounds great.
I’ve heard John Piper use the term “undistracted excellence” when talking about ministry. Meaning: whatever you do, strive for excellence, but not to the point that it is distracting to you or others. The “undistracted” part would mean one does not have to hire professional musicians for leading worship…the “excellence” part would be tune your guitar!
